Storlien/Storvallen is a classic Swedish highland destination. The railway which opened in 1882 started what in a few years time would become Sweden’s most popular winter sports resort, and the popularity lasted for many decades. Do like the Swedish Royalty, choose Storlien/Storvallen!
The easiest way of getting here is still by train. Climb onboard in the evening in Malmö, Stockholm or Gothenburg and wake up, well rested in the middle of Storlien! Storlien is situated at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level and Storvallen at about 550 m, meaning that you step right out into the highlands with the peaks all around you as you alight from the train or step out of the car.
Here you can fish for char and salmon trout in more than 20 tarns, all on the same fishing permit. Lake Ånnsjön and Handöl offer excellent opportunities for fishing together with the state-owned reindeer pasture land. You can also fish for salmon in the River Stjördalsälven in Norway, or aim for the more than 300 lakes all included in Meråker’s fishing permit area in the neighbouring country.
The free hiking southbound, outside the trails and paths is very scenic and exciting. Remember that more than 3 000 soldiers froze to death at New Year 1718/19 within a stone’s throw from here. You are on historic land!
You might be lucky and find the war chest that the Karolingian soldiers had to leave behind in the blizzard…
In the winter, you can set off down any of the 23 groomed pistes in Storlien. Here is also one of the best fun parks in the country where the innovative grooming machine drivers of Storlien find out better jumps and rails every year.
