Sven Wolter suggests
attractions in Ragunda:
“Nature! Fishing in the River Ammerån.
One unique and extraordinary
experience is a stroll along the river
with a rod in the company of friends”.
Look out for the
summer programme
at Döda Fallet. dodafallet.nu.
Ragundadalen is the place where the adventures start. This is where the challenges, surprises, opportunities and the almost exotic nature prevail. Ragunda is different.
If you are tempted by the incredulous, you should visit the Thai Pavilion or the nature reserve Döda Fallet and ponder over how Magnus Huss, over two hundred years ago, mistakenly moved the massive waterway of the River Indalsälven with the result of him overnight emptying most of Lake Ragundasjön.
Döda Fallet (the dead falls) shows another unusual sight. Here you can sit down on an impressive revolving podium made of wood and watch theatre performances with the mighty Ragundadalen as a backdrop.
Others may prefer the adventures in the form of white-water rafting in the River Ammerån, rock-climbing in Stugun or the adventurous zorbing in Döviken.
We all have something of a collector’s mind, it’s genetic. The large impressive wooden ‘castles’ in Skyttmon were built during the 1800s and looking at them, many people want to find out more about the area and the background to them being built in this particular area.
Most things in Ragundadalen the inhabitants and guides can tell you about, such as the excellent fishing waters and the wonderful nature.
But there are other things they are unable to explain and one of them is the haunted Spökprästgården in Borgvattnet. For more than a century unexplainable things have happened in the old vicarage and not everyone dares spending the night there. Do you? Those who manage a night here get a diploma.
The Thai Pavilion
Previously the location of a sheep’s pen with lots of unruly birch trees, today the site of a bit of Thailand, tempting with culture and history. Just like an exotic gem in white and gold there it stands, the only one of its kind outside Thailand. One of Sweden’s most remarkable buildings and certainly one of the most beautiful.
Döda Fallet
Translated meaning the dead falls, which were created in the worst known natural disaster in Sweden. Where previously one of Sweden’s mightiest waterfalls used to roar you can nowadays walk around studying the giant pot holes, royal signatures and take part of Ragundadalen’s history and scenic nature.
Outdoor theatre on Vridläktaren
During the summer months, plays are staged with some famous Swedish actors as well as other events before Sweden’s largest outdoor rotating podium; during the performance you will complete a full circle, 360 degrees. The stage is the ground around the podium and in the backdrop you have the stunning views of the Döda Fallet.
Zorbing in Döviken or White-water rafting in the River Ammerån
These are two of Ragundadalen’s most extreme and adventurous activities, both of them ideal for business meetings, team-building and other events. The main attraction at Zorbcenter is zorbing – a ride in a transparent giant plastic sphere - but the organizers also offer ATVs and Zipline. When staying with Ammerådalens Forsrännare you can also join hunting and fishing courses.
Biting, anyone?
Ragundadalen has many fine fishing waters where you can try your luck. Best known is the River Ammerån, one of few unexploited waterways in Sweden. In the River Indalsälven chances are good for a pike or two biting. Our fishing packages tempt with everything from ‘Girls Only’ fishing tours to the ‘Big Pike’ package.
The haunted vicarage
In the forests above Borgvattnet lies the famous haunted vicarage Spökprästgården. Here, inexplicable things have occurred for more than a century. You can opt for a coffee here or to spend the night in this mythical vicarage; one of the best known haunted buildings in the country.
Skyttmon – the village of the wooden castles
Skyttmon is a village rich in ancient remains in testimony of previous settlements. In modern times the first inhabitants arrived in the mid-1700s. The large wooden buildings from the 1800s also called ‘wooden castles’ dominate the view as you approach the village. This is also the habitat of many extremely rare orchids.
Religious tourism
In Ragunda you can walk the Pilgrim Trail, view our spiritual treasures in the old churches as upholders of a valuable cultural heritage. You can also visit the Buddhist centre and meet the Thai monks.
Winter in Ragundadalen
From the end of November, the cross-country tracks from the summit of Mount Kullstaberget in Hammarstrand are usually ready.
The alpine pistes, adjacent to the lift are of varying degree of difficulty and there are dedicated children’s and sleigh rides.
Nearby is also a natural luge course. Ragunda is an excellent alternative for families aiming for a quiet and affordable winter holiday
Krångede Museum
This is a museum that connects the old times with present life; a well designed museum which illustrates how people lived during the era of the hydraulic-power expansion. Watch, listen and view the films and exhibitions in the floating run.
Local produce
In and around Ragunda are various farm shops offering locally manufactured produce. How about produce based on sea buckthorn with all its beneficial effects or dairy products such as cheese made of goat’s or cow’s milk?
