The waters of the River Ljungan run all the way from the fells down to the Baltic coast. Along the valleys are villages such as Börtnan, with fishing and hunting nearby, Åsarna the home of many gold medallists in Nordic skiing and the beautiful surroundings of Rätan with wonderful sandy beaches for swims far into the long light summer nights.
Åsarna ’Guldbyn’, (the gold village) relates to all the international achievements carried out by the many successful Nordic skiers of Åsarna Idrottsklubb ever since the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1970. At Skidmuseet in Skicenter you can see some of the club’s successes. Among the local attractions is also a beer museum at Big Moose Hotel, a unique arched stone bridge made in granite and the beautiful church in Västeråsen. In the winter Åsarna tempts with excellent cross-country skiing, with fine tracks for dog sledding, a recently added ski biathlon course and many miles of snowmobile trails.
Around Lake Rätanssjön are various lovely sandy beaches and at Rätans Camping there are boats for hire, a heated pool and other services. Here are also various pleasant hiking trails in the surrounding forests.
The wide forests are very important for the region and the River Ljungan was an essential timber transport route. Hammarede Skogsmiljö depicts forestry in the old way.
In Kvarnsjö the views of the fells are stunning. Here are hiking trails and opportunities for a canoe trip.
The villages Skålan and Börtnan, situated on the shores of the River Ljungan also have the facilities for active outdoor recreation such as berry picking, fishing and hunting. Active in Börtnan are awarded food producers; bread and fish of the very highest quality are produced and processed here. From Börtnan you can opt to travel along Fäbovägen with active summer farms and onwards to Arådalen, an ideal starting point for mountain hiking and to Glen where you can experience Sami adventures. Skålan has a listed petrol station and the mighty stream Trångforsen with an exciting suspension bridge à la Indiana Jones.
