Ideas, attractions and nature experiences are somewhat like mushrooms; if you find one, there are usually several more nearby. An example of this is in Krokom and Ansättfjällen – an endless stretch of land between Åre and Östersund.
Nearest to Östersund lies the fertile and calciferous area Storsjö- and Krokomsbygden tempting with sunny glens in the forest landscape which so dominates the urban areas in Jämtland. When opting for the fishing route Fiskevägen from Krokom you will soon reach the floral Mount Ansätten and eventually both Norway and the Atlantic Ocean.
Krokom is thus a good piece of Jämtland and an area which offers many highlights for all senses and age groups.
Highly diversified
The waters with rich stocks of fish cut through the villages while the massifs provide a backdrop to the west. Here is plenty of room for everyone and all over the area you will encounter dedicated people with lots of time for the visitors. Set a new angling record and organise your own fishing dream along Fiskevägen - the fishing route; sample the award-winning manually produced cheeses, learn more about the timber floating era, divulge yourself in Mus-Olles marvellous collections or walk the path Blomsterleden to the floral mountain Ansätten with rich populations of orchids.
Go hiking, paddling, bicycling or horseback riding but make sure to take good time doing it. During the summer, the cultural events are plenty; tractor pulling, barn dancing and the horn concerts at Offerdalsstämman are but some of the favourites.
For some less strenuous activities you can stop for a coffee at a shieling, indulge in the history of the area and its cultural heritage. Visit a museum or Glösa where the several thousand years old rock carvings never cease to fascinate. Conclude the visit with a round of golf on the course situated a mere water hazard from the fells.
Cheese, chocolate truffles and other tasty produce
At Skärvångens Bymejeri the dairy produces cheese from cow’s and goat’s milk in a traditional, manual way. During the summer, you can join a guided tour, sample some of the 20 cheeses in Caféets Ostbuffé or buy a piece of cheese in the shop. Tinas Praliner in the beautiful village Helleberg produces the most fabulous chocolate creams and truffles. A visit here also invites miles upon miles of views of the Jämtland fells range.
Magnificent floral fells
Walk the Blomsterleden trail from Bakvattnet the 6 km to the summit of the floral mount Ansätten, on your own or with a guide and acquaint yourself with the magnificent flora of the fells. From the agricultural region to the bare mountain sector grow some 390 species, many of them orchids. The guided tours run on Saturdays and also come as packages with overnight stays and meals.
The achievements of a remarkable man
At Mus-Olles Museum in Ytterån the history describes a remarkable man who himself collected 150 000 articles, of which 25 000 pieces of packaging material and he also started the museum. The spa era was significant to Olle’s collecting, and the reason for the turn-of-the –century environment consisting of a folly and a spa pavilion.
Fishing all the months of the year
Fish your way along the fishing route ‘Fiskevägen’ from Krokom to Norway, a novelty this year is the single fishing permit ‘Fiskevägenkortet’ valid in no less than seven fishery conservation areas along the route. The opportunities for fishing are many and varied; from Lake Storsjön’s free angling from land to the exclusive Långså fishing with the Sami organizer Sovvene. Try landing the big Arctic char in Lake Landösjön, the place for many angling records over the past years.
Nature’s own garden
Orchids are found in many places in the area. From around Midsummer, large amounts of Lady’s Slipper and some 20 other species are in bloom at Vikekärret on the island Rödön. Some of the other ‘certain’ habitats are Forsåsens Orkidékärr and Blomsterleden, the floral trail. The rare Gymnadenia Nigra is found at Naturbetesmarkerna in Rise, Tulleråsen.
One water hazard from the fells
Go ‘clubbing’ at Krokoms Golfbana, the golf course situated on the shores of Lake Storsjön with 13 holes, a new practice range and the best training area in Jämtland. For other options try the practice range and Football golf in Åkersjön.
Stone Age graffiti
Divulge in the history of our ancestors; visit the Stone Age art exhibition at Glösabäcken or Gärdesån, with rock carvings dating back 6,000 and 7,000 years respectively. In Glösa Älgrike you can visit the ‘Älgklanens viste’ (the elk clan camp) with features such as Älghallen, trapping pit exhibitions and a Stone Age hut.
A touch of the old days
When walking into Krokoms Gamla Lanthandel you step into a genuine turn-of-the-century grocery shop with nostalgic goods and a café. Skansen Klintaberg in Valsjöbyn invites guided walks in the summer, aiming to depict how the war affected the people in Hotagsbygden and Jämtland.
Tractor action
In Flykälen, on road 339 towards Strömsund, every year during week 29 a home-comers’ week is organised with pub nights, dancing and serving of the typical ‘kams’. The highlight of the week is on Saturday with the Tractor Pulling event. Among the exhaust fumes and loud powerful engines, thrive the young and adults alike.
Remarkable bedrock
Throughout Krokom Municipality there are 26 geologically interesting sites, each of them with an information board. In addition, at Geologicentrum Krokom there is a special exhibition at Jo-Gården which complemented by a leaflet easily explains how the bedrock was formed and brought here.
Little mountain paradise
In the winter, all the snowmobilers have their fill in Ansättfjällen, on the 100 km of groomed and in total 600 km of snowmobile routes. This is also a preferred area for skiers on the various cross-country ski tracks and ski touring trails, several ski lifts where the Almåsaberget pistes are of Swedish Championship standard. And then there is always the chance of landing fish for dinner when ice-jigging.
