Åre is the leading Nordic mountain destination, all year round. Once winter releases its grip of the valley, bicycles replace skis, snowshoes leave room for hiking boots and the wide offering of activities blend in with the serenity of nature.
During the dry-land season Åre Square sees a steady flow of bikers, hikers, holiday-makers and other visitors, while some kilometres away, total serenity reigns. A ptarmigan takes flight as you walk past its nest, you drink the water straight from the brook and the orchids reach for the sun on the calciferous vast expanses of the highlands.
For more than one hundred years, tourists have ventured to Årebygden. They stay in comfort, explore the mountains and all the activities on offer, enjoy good meals and shopping in all the shops in Åre.
Tall visions
One of the signature features of Åre is the cable car, ‘Kabinbanan’. In the winter just like in the summer, the cable car provides a comfortable way of getting to the summit of Mount Åreskutan. The base station is situated within a stone’s throw of Åre Square. Mount Åreskutan and Kabinbanan are starting points for both action and stillness. The hiking trails in and around Åre have been renovated and the new hiking map invites rambles on some twenty easily reached hiking trails. The more action-seeking visitors will find world-class downhill bicycling, paragliding with some of the best Swedish tandem pilots and zipline tours where you, strapped in a harness, travel fast down the sides of the peak hanging from a steel cable.
Adventures in and on the water
The adventurous visitors will find many opportunities for adrenalin-packed rides on one of the many white-water rivers in Åre. Several organisers offer all-day packages with refreshments, rafting and ‘Après-river’ at one of the bars in Åre.
Those more intent on a quiet pastime may opt for a canoe or kayak tour in quiet waters in order to explore the fauna close to the shores. It is a well-known fact that Jämtland is famous for its fishing waters but few people may know that Åre offers just as many opportunities for fishing as it has alpine pistes. Turistbyrån sells fishing permits and also offers suggestions for some of Sweden’s best fishing waters.
Unique to Åredalen
Handicraft and local produce have strong influence in the Åredalen valley. Åre Chokladfabrik delivers chocolate truffles all over the country and the tasteful collection is available for sampling in the factory shop in Björnänge just east of Åre. In the glass-works Åre Glashytta in Duved you are invited to observe the fabulous art of glass-blowing. A few kilometres west of Åre Square you can visit Millest Moose Farm and kiss a moose. Here you can also climb up Duveds Skans – the final outpost of the Karoliner soldiers before the campaign against Tröndelag. Fröå Gruva a few kilometres east of Åre Square, with instant connections to fine hiking trails depicts exciting stories of the mining era in Åre and the surroundings.
